Tending the Winter Landscape

Class will meet on the following Saturdays from 10a to 4p:
January 24th, February 7th, February 21st, and March 7th

This series is a hands-on, deep dive into understanding and tending place during the winter months. Participants will learn the secrets to identifying plants throughout the year and recognizing ecological features that tell the narrative of place. With these basics in mind, we will explore hands-on activities to tend the landscape while also providing ourselves with food and medicine. We will see that we can provide for our needs while also improving the landscape around us!

Class will be held at the beautiful Mahonia Land Trust just outside Oregon City, with carpools available from Portland. Folks will take home a bounty of what the land has to offer: medicinal preparations, a mushroom log, plant starts, and the know-how to better serve the landscape around us.

Skills you will learn: Winter twig ID, Ecology, Finding microclimates and planting native plants, Winter tree pruning basics, How to safely fell a tree, Tapping Maple Trees for syrup, Planting mushrooms into a landscape for food and habitat, Harvesting winter plant medicine and Making herbal preparations to new a few.

Class cost is: $600, including materials. Early bird discount: $525 if registered and paid by December 15th.

Medicinal Plant Sale

March 21st and 22nd from 10 to 3
20495 South Geiger Rd in Oregon City

For this two-day event, we will have so many Western and Chinese Medicinals, NW Natives and perennial vegetables that thrive in NW gardens! There will also be a great selection of seeds on hand, all gathered right here on the farm! (All of our 4-inch containers are $6 and gallons just $15! There will be a reduced rate for cash payments. Medicine will also be on hand, from a selection of tinctures to dried plants, even stones gathered here in the NW. We will be serving tea, hanging out, and are always excited to talk plants!

Medicinal Plant Walk

Medicinal Plants of Winter, Sliding Scale

In this pay what you can hike, we will wander the Forest and Riverside to learn the early spring plants by the flower. Since the flower are key to properly ID plants for food or medicine, this is where we will spend most of our conversation. We will also go into ecology, food and medicinal uses of the plants we encounter. Hike will be approximately 2 miles. Bring what you need for a leisurely stroll

We’ll meet in front of the main restrooms. Go past the first parking space on your left and go another 100 yards to where the road ends at a loop. The dog park will be on one side of the parking lot and on the other, tucked in the forest, you will find me near the restrooms.

Class cost is $0-$40, no one turned away for lack of funds. Please bring cash for this sliding scale offering!
