Poplar Buds & Red Cedar

Wednesday, Feb. 14th from 1p to 4p

The cold, wet days of winter might not seem to be the optimal time to work with plants, but it is in fact the BEST time to work with a few of our premier medicinals.

Join us for a stroll through the winter landscape to see how the plants can always reveal their stories if we have the right tools. On this short hike, we will learn to identify trees and shrubs based on their twigs and buds as we discover more secrets of the season. We will also discuss medicinal uses, winter ecology, and ethical wildcrafting.

Botanical Basics

Now that spring is officially here, it is the perfect time to meet the new blossoms in the Northwest forests. On this short hike, we will not only get to know some of our early bloomers, we will also introduce the botanical basics to keep you identifying plants in the future. We will spend our time learning the language of flowers, since that is the best tool to be 100% accurate with plant identification. And for those of us using plants as food or medicine, this skill is critical.

Understanding Place

Wednesday, May 1st
From 1p to 4p

In this short stroll we will get to know some common weeds and natives to see what they can share with us about place. By learning some key indicator plants or communities we can often tell what happened to an area in the past and even what plants may follow when they pass. By understanding some basic ecological principles, we can feel more rooted in place and connected to the story unfolding around us. This can also help us find certain plants or fungi, show us opportunities to harvest certain medicines and even better design our gardens.

Class location TBD within the Portland Metro area. Cost is $50-$35, sliding scale. Registration is required by April 27th
